I once watched a child eye a tree branch, hesitate, then step back. "Be careful," his parent warned. He turned away.
How often does this happen? Kids are wired for adventure, climbing, running, and exploring. But fear creeps in. Ours and theirs.
What if they fall? What if it's not safe? What if we're too busy, too tired, or don't have the right space?
These worries are real. But so is this: Kids who play adventurously build confidence, resilience, and deeper family bonds.
Adventure play doesn't have to be reckless or complicated. Let's shift the mindset and bring adventure back without the stress. Let's dive in!
#354: Teaching Resilience & Strategic Thinking Through the Classic Game Connect Four
If kids struggle to take risks outdoors, how can we help them build resilience before they even step outside?
This week on Energetic Radio, Paul Campbell and I reveal how something as simple as Connect Four can teach kids the strategic thinking, patience, and problem-solving skills needed to take on real-life challenges.
Through personal stories and powerful insights, we explore how games create a safe space to practice risk-taking and bouncing back from setbacks. Because when kids learn to handle frustration in play, they build the confidence to tackle bigger challenges like climbing that tree or exploring the world beyond their comfort zone.
If you want to raise adaptable kids, this episode is a must-listen. Tune in now!

Daily Mission Cards
“I don’t want them to get hurt.” It’s a thought that stops many parents from letting their kids fully explore adventurous play.
Today’s mission: Visit a playground and encourage your child to push their limits in a safe, controlled environment. Let them climb, jump, and swing higher than usual. Watch how they assess risk, make decisions, and adapt when something feels too tough.
Here’s how to support them without hovering:
- Encourage, don’t instruct. Ask, “What’s your plan?” instead of “Be careful!”
- Let them lead. Watch how they react before stepping in.
- Celebrate effort, not just success. Confidence grows from trying, not just achieving.
